Mumbai: Ravi Shastri’s reappointment as head coach of the Indian team was not influenced by captain Virat Kohli’s public backing of the incumbent, Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC) chief Kapil Dev said on Friday. Shastri was reappointed for a two-year period by the CAC, a decision that was expected. His term will again be up for review after the 2021 T20 World Cup in India. “Not at all, because if we take his (Kohli’s) views we would have taken the entire team’s views too. We haven’t asked anyone. There was no scope for that,” said Kapil when asked if the skipper’s preference influenced the final decision. On the flip side, India twice lost in the World Cup semi-finals (2015 and 2019) with him at the helm but that didn’t seem to have had a bearing on the decision taken by the committee that also comprised Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad. Asked about the team’s semifinal exits in ICC competitions, Kapil said, “If any manager don’t win (a World Cup) with any team, they should be sacked? No, you look at overall picture and we are not looking at that, we are looking what presentation he has given, we have gone by that.” Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterSince he came back in July, 2017 replacing Anil Kumble, whose differences with Kohli came out in the open, Shastri’s coaching record has been phenomenal. India have won 13 out of 21 Tests, 43 out of 60 ODIs and 25 T20 Internationals out of 36 on his watch. Going by what India’s first World Cup-winning skipper said, Shastri’s communication skills may have played a big part. “All of them were excellent. Sometime I felt Shastri had more skills of communication, they may have felt differently but we didn’t discuss about that, we have given the marks after listening to their presentations. “We all three have learnt so much, knowing how much hard work they have put in their presentation,” Kapil said. Shastri pipped former India teammates Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput along with former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson and Australian Tom Moody to the post. Former West Indies and Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons pulled out of the race, citing personal reasons. Asked about the advantage Shastri had over others, Gaekwad said, “Basically, being the current coach, knowing the boys well, knowing the problems well in the team and what needs to be done. “I think he is well-versed with the entire system. If somebody knows the system, knows the players well and can communicate well, I think he has the advantage.” Before leaving for the West Indies tour, Kohli, when asked if he would prefer Shastri at the helm again, the India captain responded in the positive. “Well, the CAC has not contacted me on this. But all of us share a great camaraderie with Ravi bhai and would definitely be very happy (to have him around), Kohli had said. Shastri was the team director till June 2016 until India lost in the World T20 semi-finals before being appointed as head coach in 2017. The ad-hoc body had earlier appointed W V Raman as the women’s team coach in December.
“There is a sense that the globalized world is an increasingly unfair one, where around 2.8 billion people – almost half of the world’s population – live on less than $2 a day,” Mark Malloch Brown said, stressing that nonetheless, the potential that globalization offered to developing countries was real. “The ability to leapfrog decades, to recapture lost ground, to redeem long-standing promises of prosperity to the people, is available.” The Fourth WTO ministerial meeting in Doha, Qatar, from 9 to 13 November, should find real solutions to outstanding problems and other unresolved trade issues, Mr. Malloch Brown said. This is particularly true in areas like technology transfer and intellectual property that have so far delivered much less than promised for developing countries. “A trade round that fails to address key issues for developing countries will be very problematic,” he added. A background paper prepared for the UNDP Trade and Sustainable Development Project argues that imported blueprints rarely spark economic growth, and that opening up countries’ economies for trade is hardly ever critical at the outset. A development-friendly trading regime, the paper argues, would evaluate demands of institutional reform by poor countries not from the perspective of integration into the world trading system but from that of development: “what do countries need to do to achieve broad-based, equitable economic growth?”The paper, The Global Governance of Trade: As if Development Really Mattered, says that a reinvigorated focus on development and poverty alleviation would have far-reaching implications for the way the international trading regime and the WTO function. Shifting to a development focus would foster a more development-friendly international economic environment, the paper says. “Countries would be able to use trade as a means for development, rather than being forced to view trade as an end in itself.”
In the past two months alone, more than 6,000 people have fled the fighting, as well as ongoing hostilities in the context of the country’s civil war. The clashes, around the Baudo, Atrato and San Juan rivers, have also severely restricted the movements of a further 7,000 people. “To date, the displacement has mostly affected Afro-Colombians and indigenous people,” William Spindler, spokesperson of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said in a regular bi-weekly news briefing to reporters in Geneva. “For these people, access to livelihoods, including fishing, hunting and agriculture, has been completely cut off and their children are no longer able to go to school,” he added. The spokesperson noted that the magnitude of the situation has overwhelmed the local authorities’ ability to respond to basic needs, including food, health care, shelter and psychological support. UNHCR is working in close coordination with the Colombian authorities and other humanitarian agencies to provide emergency assistance and logistical support to the displaced communities. Mr. Spindler highlighted that the clashes come as the Government of Colombia is in the final stages of peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the principal guerrilla force in the country, and recently announced the launch of formal negotiations with another group, the National Liberation Army (ELN). The peace dialogue, launched in 2012, aims to put an end to more than 50 years of armed conflict with FARC, which has generated close to 7 million internally displaced people and 350,000 Colombian refugees, living mainly in Ecuador and Venezuela. “UNHCR today urgently calls on all parties to the conflict to guarantee the safety of the civilian population,” Mr. Spindler said. “This includes refraining from establishing military bases in or near civilian settlements and carrying out bombing raids in these areas. It is also essential to address the structural causes of displacement, including control over territory and resources.” Ending the forced displacement of Colombian internally displaced people and refugees is critical to the establishment of sustainable peace in Colombia and to the country’s socio-economic recovery, the spokesperson emphasized. UNHCR added that failing to reintegrate internally displaced people and returnees will jeopardize the success of the fragile transition period and increases the risk of new displacements.
OSU’s defense watches a tipped ball that would then be intercepted by redshirt freshman cornerback Damon Arnette (3) during the first half of the Buckeyes game against Northwestern on Oct. 29. The Buckeyes won 24-20. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorLast season, a 49-28 victory for the Ohio State football team against Maryland in Ohio Stadium satisfied most fans desires to see the Buckeyes take down an unranked opponent. But all was not smooth sailing for OSU, as then-junior Terrapins quarterback Perry Hills torched the Scarlet and Gray on the ground.Hills picked up 170 yards rushing, along with a pair of touchdowns, the last time OSU met Maryland. The Pittsburgh native had much less success passing the ball, but still managed to keep his team within striking distance at halftime. After the teams went into the locker rooms with the Buckeyes up 21-14, OSU outscored Maryland 28-14 in the second half. Hills attempted to force the ball down the field with his team behind, and ended up throwing a pair of picks in the fourth quarter. Last week, OSU held a potent Nebraska offense to just 204 yards of offense. Cornhuskers’ quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., a mobile threat with a big arm, was held to just 93 total yards before being knocked out of the game after taking a hard fall on the sideline in the second quarter. This week, the Buckeyes will be presented with another mobile threat at quarterback in Hills. Although Maryland has lost four of the last five, the success of its quarterback could carry the team like last year against OSU. Containing Hills is the No. 1 priority for the Buckeyes. Although Maryland could be considered a below-average team, OSU is not taking this week lightly with just three weeks left in the season. “I don’t take any game for granted or see them as lesser than any other team,” OSU quarterback J.T. Barrett said. “You can get beat any time in the Big Ten. We need to take the same approach against Maryland that we took against Nebraska.”

McDonald’s has announced it is looking into extending its delivery service to countries including the UK.The fast food giant already delivers to countries including China and Singapore, and now it’s set its sights on the US, France, the UK, Germany and Canada. The company said with the rapid increase in food delivery in these countries “the landscape has created an exceptional opportunity for growth”.“Because of our extraordinary footprint, McDonald’s is uniquely positioned to become the global leader in delivery,” it said in a statement. Because most customers in its five biggest markets live within three miles of a McDonald’s, delivery is even more feasible as it will be delivered while it’s still hot.The company continued: “One of the most significant disruptions in the restaurant business today is the rapid increase in delivery. Through technology, delivery has changed the way customers order, pay, track and receive food and provide feedback.“Coupled with the explosive growth in third-party delivery companies, the landscape has created an exceptional opportunity for growth. “McDonald’s is already one of the largest providers of delivered food in the world, with annual Systemwide delivery sales of nearly $1billion across various markets including China, South Korea and Singapore.”China has tripled its delivery business since its launch in 2008. In 2016 alone, China’s delivery business grew 30 per cent.”The company has its own drivers in China and Singapore, but is testing delivery while partnering with companies including Uber in Florida. The food giant hopes the plans will combat falling sales; the company has lost 500million customers since 2012.

Tom Guilmette is a professional camera man who has been working in the TV industry for many years. That hasn’t dulled his love of shooting with cool equipment every chance he gets, though, so when he got handed a Vision Research Phantom High Speed Digital Cinema camera he started experimenting. The camera is the new Flex version. He was in Las Vegas to shoot the World Championships of Ping Pong (WCPP), but he needed to get used to the camera first, so he spent a whole night playing with it in his hotel room. The result is this rather epic video that was shot at 2,564 frame per second. The detail on view here is astonishing, and it’s some of the best I’ve seen. The phone hitting a hard surface was especially interesting seeing how the whole case reacted to the impact, as was the way water comes out of the tap and almost forming a ball before dropping. I think the light bulb smashing is my favorite, though. If only the cameras in our smartphones were capable of capturing such detail.Read more at tomguilmette.com
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus finally made the move to Sprint just two days ago. For Sprint customers looking to upgrade or people looking to make the leap from another carrier, here’s your chance! While the Nexus is admittedly a marvel of smartphone tech, there are a few carrier-centric problems. You can’t even take advantage of the 4G LTE capabilities on the Nexus — Sprint still hasn’t finished building its 4G network. However, it’s supposed to roll out next year in several big US cities. You may want to pass over this deal if you don’t live in a major metropolis, as you’ll be out of luck for some time, though the GNex is still an excellent phone.LogicBuy found the lowest existing price on the Sprint Nexus currently available. For $139.99, you’ll get an extra $65 off than what Sprint’s offering, plus an additional $50 in Google Wallet credits. Google Wallet uses built-in NFC chip, making the GNex one of the first phones to feature the built-in mobile payment hardware and a system with which to use it.The Nexus comes with all the top-grade internal goodies we’ve come to expect from new Samsung phones: the Super AMOLED screen (4.3-inch), next-gen Hummingbird processor, GPS, front and rear facing cameras, and yes, 4G LTE (stand by for a network by you!). This phone also comes with full flash support and a large 16GB bank of internal memory. The Nexus is still cheaper through Verizon — by $50, actually — but if you’re dedicated Sprint customer, you won’t find a deal on a new Samsung phone better than this.Check out this deal at LogicBuy.
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram A Greek taxi driver has been convicted of causing deadly bodily injury in the stabbing death of a teenage British vacationer on the resort island of Zakynthos last year. A court in the western town of Patras on Wednesday dropped murder charges against the 22-year-old man, which would have carried a maximum life sentence. The taxi driver received an 11-year jail sentence for the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Robert Sebbage and the injury of three of the Briton’s friends, his defense lawyer said. Constantinos Argyropoulos described the verdict as «fair,» saying his client acted in self-defense and had no intention to kill. The taxi driver has apologized for the stabbing, saying he lashed out with a pocket knife after being taunted by a group of British youths. Source: Kathimerini

Clark County is seeking volunteer mentors for juvenile offenders. Training begins in April. For details, call 360-397-8246 ext. 7517.Project Combine on the WebClark County is one of four places across the nation that has received a grant to help harness the power of research showing that caring adults can make a difference helping youth turn away from a life of crime. The $66,500 grant from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention will help the county set up a mentoring program, called Project Combine, for offenders in the Juvenile Recovery Court, the equivalent of probation but with a stronger rehabilitation focus, said Brad Finegood, coordinator of the recovery court. The county is now seeking volunteers to serve as mentors for a period of at least 12 months. Training is tentatively scheduled for April. Training takes about 10 hours.Jimi Evans, mentor coordinator for Project Combine in Clark County, said the goal is to match mentors with 95 juveniles in two years’ time.“They’ll be modeling and demonstrating healthy adult relationships with youth,” Evans said. “We know that’s one consistent component seen in youth who turn their lives around.”Chestnut Health Care and Aftercare for Indiana through Mentoring developed the program and served as the sub-grantor for OJJDP. In addition to Clark County, they gave grants to the Pima Prevention Partnership in Tuscan, Ariz., Denver Juvenile Probation in Colorado and Horizon Behavioral Health in Lynchburg, Va., to launch Project Combine.
Alcohol addiction can increase the risk of heart attack, atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure along with other risk factors like diabetes and high blood pressure, a study has found. The findings showed that alcohol abuse was associated with a two-fold increased risk of atrial fibrillation – irregular, often rapid heart rate causing poor blood flow. There is also a 1.4-fold increased risk of heart attack and a 2.3-fold increased risk of congestive heart failure – a condition in which the heart does not pump blood well. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThese increased risks were similar in magnitude to other well-recognised modifiable risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.“We found that even if you have no underlying risk factors, abuse of alcohol still increases the risk of these heart conditions,” said lead researcher Gregory M Marcus, Director at the University of California, San Francisco. Completely eradicating alcohol abuse would result in over 73,000 fewer atrial fibrillation cases, 34,000 fewer heart attacks, and 91,000 fewer patients with congestive heart failure in the US alone, the researchers noted. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveFor the study, the team analysed 14.7 million patients from California aged 21 and older who received ambulatory surgery, emergency or inpatient medical care. Among these 1.8 per cent, or approximately 268,000, were diagnosed with alcohol abuse. “We were somewhat surprised to find those diagnosed with some form of alcohol abuse were at significantly higher risk of a heart attack,” Marcus said. “We hope this study will temper the enthusiasm for drinking in excess and will avoid any justification for excessive drinking because people think it will be good for their heart. These data pretty clearly prove the opposite,” he stated. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The International Monetary Fund, part of the troika of international lenders, considers that the prior actions demanded by Cyprus’ adjustment programme have been fulfilled, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) said.To get the money from the European Stability Mechanism, the eurozone bailout fund, Nicosia had to amend laws on foreclosures and forced sales of mortgaged property in line with a deal with its international lenders.Quoting an unnamed IMF source, CNA said on Friday that the organisation’s governing board will convene in December to conclude the fifth review.“We consider the prior action met at this stage, on the basis of the developments of the past few days,” the source said. The IMF will contribute €86 million. The IMF’s decision follows that of the Eurogroup, which on Thursday approved the disbursal of €350 million, the European Commission and the European Central Bank’s contribution. However, the IMF echoed the other two bodies in warning that cash will be released on condition that parties would not seek to limit the scope of the foreclosures law.Approval of the tranche was delayed by around a month after opposition parties insisted on passing legislation limiting the scope of the law.Their bills were thrown out by the Supreme Court but parties are again seeking to legislate, claiming they were trying to protect people’s primary residences. The government, in co-operation with all parties bar AKEL, which chose to sit on the fence, is trying to prepare the so-called insolvency framework that will contain safeguards for vulnerable groups hit by the recession.“If there is no further legislative action, I think we could go towards a completion of the review and I would expect a Board meeting on this towards the middle of December,” the IMF source said.Disbursement of the tranche will be completed in three to four weeks. The same source said that the next Troika mission will visit Cyprus in January but no specific dates have been set yet.The source noted that the insolvency framework is “the focus of the program at this stage.”The plan is to enact the framework before the end of this year so that it will be in force when a suspension of repossessions of primary residencies expires on January 1, 2015.AKEL has submitted a bill to suspend the foreclosures law until the end of June, 2015, while EDEK and the Green party want the law suspended until the insolvency framework kicks in.You May LikeLocksmith of HeartsPhil Collins’s Daughter Is Probably The Most Pretty Woman Ever Existed.Locksmith of HeartsUndoEditorChoice.comIf You See Square Waves In The Ocean Get Out Of The Water ImmediatelyEditorChoice.comUndoNovelodgeBaby Photoshoots That Went Hilariously WrongNovelodgeUndo Pensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCruise passenger airlifted to Paphos hospitalUndoRemand for pair in alleged property fraud (Updated)Undoby Taboolaby Taboola
